Beads

Beads are a popular art medium in prisons. Bead work was a traditional Native American craft, and was used to adorn utilitarian items such as moccasins, bags, and clothing.
Inmates use beads to express themselves in standalone pieces and traditional items. Sports events are extremely popular in prison.  Therefore, artists often make items which represent loyalty to their favorite teams, so you will find many sports teams represented here.
Prison craft shops often exclude inmates who have violated unit rules. They can also prevent inmates with certain charges from the craft shop. Prison staff do not often directly encourage an inmate to make art. A minor rule violation can cause staff to remove an inmate’s privileges.
The art displayed here was produced by inmates who have had to work hard to maintain access to their prison’s art program. Therefore, they often express their struggles in the art they produce.
