Big Brother is watching. Or more to the point, Big Brother is reading. They’re reading all the incoming and outgoing email writings that prisoners are publishing, and they don’t like it.
What they don’t like about it is that the some of the more-oppressed people in American society have a platform whereby they can freely write their thoughts, opinions, observations, and news articles. Some write about wet dreams, others about their personal changes in life. But some, some of us write about the illegal activities of the DOC and their personnel, and DOC is pissed about the attention.
In fact, they’re so pissed about it that they commit more crimes to cover-up the articles being written about the crimes they’ve already committed. They’ve gone so far so as to illegally withhold incoming and outgoing legal documents in the U.S.P.S. mail without issuing mail rejections (Fourteenth Amendment, Fourth Amendment, Theft of U.S. mail, Conversion) they’ve illegally blocked–categorically–prisoners’ access to communicate with nonprofit prisoner-rights organizations (First Amendment)(ACLU is already on board for two of those lawsuits, updates to follow) they’ve intentionally libeled upstanding members of society–a Washington State Notary Public, even–and called them criminals (Invasion of Privacy–False Light tort) and recently retaliated against some prisoners for their blog writings (Fourteenth Amendment, Official Misconduct–RCW 9A.80.010(1)(a)) by writing and submitting intentionally false and misleading reports about our protected speech (First Amendment, False Report–RCW 42.20.040).
Inmateartwork.com and asa-wa.us are prisoner-advocate free websites for all prisoners to stretch their artistic and creative muscles and publish their writings, as long as the writings don’t violate laws or prison rules or become unreasonable. DOC has recently begun a smear-campaign whereby they suspended prisoners’ access to communicate with personnel for these sites, claiming various lies such as “illegal contract” and “unauthorized website” to justify their illegal acts. There are no contracts, as the websites are “FREE” (a word that draconian DOC does not know how to pronounce) for all prisoners to use. Likewise, there is no prohibition of “unauthorized website” for prisoners unless it obstructs the safety and security of the operations of the prison. We’re not writing death threats or advocating criminal activity: we’re writing from our personal views about the stuff we personally see and go through while in prison. Our writings are protected as free speech under the First Amendment.
One has to wonder: why is DOC so hellbent to silence our voices from prison? Us writers are focusing ourselves on therapeutic, positive activities of artistic and literary creations as opposed to creating or participating in the chaos of negativity around us. Aren’t we supposed to keep ourselves out of trouble and better ourselves while we’re in prison? How dare we not continue the stupidity and sociopathic behaviors which landed us in prison to begin with. Perhaps the DOC is scared that you, the tax-paying public who reads our writings, will gain another perspective about how DOC is misusing your tax dollars in their criminal activity and abuse of us prisoners. Hear me loud when I say that the spoon-fed bullshit that your politicians and public liaisons force down your neck through their media outlets is exactly that–spoon-fed bullshit. DOC gets sued for their crimes more than any other State agency, and they pay out millions of dollars in settlements each year to make their crimes go away quietly. And when us writers try to expose this criminal organization for what it really is, we get the proverbial smear-campaign of “fake news” and are accused of noncompliance with prison rules or State laws in order to justify DOC’s illegal oppression of our freedom of speech. There is a common mantra amongst our friends, families and supporters which should be stated here, as it is more than fitting: “The only people who still believe in the criminal justice system are those who have not yet experienced it for themselves.”
