Garridan Nelson (GN11)

Live-Edged Maple Burl Chalice
11 Hand-Carved Spirals
2 Inset Leather Braids
16 Bone Skulls (Around Base)
Storage Bag is Entirely Hand-Sewn and Embroidered

Inspired by the spiral carvings upon the Stone of New Grange that lies outside of an ancient Celtic… Garridan turned this piece from a block of live-edge maple burl (aka, burr). Once turned, he intended to carve a very different pattern between the two leather braids. However, the pattern would not lay properly. After three attempts, he tried another pattern and it too failed to lay properly after three attempts. As did a third pattern.

After a period of meditation in which the Stone of New Grange continued to appear, Garridan set to hand carving the eleven spirals that cover the body of the chalice – a delicate task as the grain of burl travels in various directions.

Sixteen bone skulls adorn the base of the chalice. A nod to the ancient Celtic tradition of displaying the skull of the deceased because of the belief that the soul resides within the head.

The New Grange Chalice is Garridan’s favorite piece – a reflection of Awen, the light of inspiration, in his life and his craft.
